Green Jobs Available and 5 Steps Toward Sustainable Building Design in Schools

Green Jobs Available presents the following article with trends in green construction for schools.  The future of construction will include incorporating more and more green technologies, and you can find a job in this field and be a part of  cutting edge technology and construction.

Schools are often the most outdated and neglected in terms of building improvement and maintenance. Millions of children walk the halls each day in buildings that suck vast resources in the form of energy, water, and waste products. Sustainable building design and eco-friendly developments in everything from rainwater irrigation to green exit signs can help cut costs, improve health and safety, and teach our children that green is good.

Green Jobs Available and Three Companies Find Ways to Save Money and Resources

Green Jobs Available presents the following recap from Climate 411.   There are countless companies, large and small, trying to innovate ways to conserve resources and grow their business in a green manner.  Contact HR representatives for more information regarding green jobs in any organization.

This week, EDF and KKR announced the results of the first year of our green portfolio project.

In just twelve months, the three pilot companies saved:

$16 million dollars 25,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions 3,000 tons of paper 650 tons of solid waste

I posted a little more about these numbers on our Innovation Exchange blog:

For the past few weeks we’ve been on phone calls and in meetings with project teams from KKR, US Foodservice, PRIMEDIA, and Sealy to review and refine these numbers for today’s announcement.

Since the underlying premise for this project is "you manage what you measure" we had to get these numbers right. We did and the initial results are really impressive. Especially considering that they are adjusted to reflect only those business and environmental benefits that were achieved through improved efficiency from 2007 to 2008, as opposed to changes in volume or sales due to the current economic downturn.

And Julie Stofer, in our communications department, highlighted some of the blog reactions:

The guys over at Triple Pundit must have had a good chat with our friends at KKR — they were the first to report some details that d fef idn’t make it into the press release, such as the inclusion of Sungard in the next round of implementation, and a projection of the number of companies that will be participating in the program by the end of the year (46). The New York Times beat the Wall Street Journal’s Deal Journal blog to the punch, getting a post featuring a pic of Henry Kravis on both Deal Book and Green, Inc. yesterday. Marc Gunther called us "a bunch of young and likely underpaid environmentalists." He agreed with our point that sometimes it just takes "looking at company operations through the fresh lens of sustainability" to achieve benefits that are good for the bottom line and the environment. Gwen Ruta, the VP of our partnership program, also chatted with GreenBiz.com about how this project has just "scratched the surface of the efficiencies that can be achieved."

I think these results demonstrate clearly the benefits that can be achieved through systematic environmental measurement and management, but it’s just the start. With over 1,000 private equity firms in the U.S. and far more portfolio companies, there’s a tremendous opportunity.

Tom Murray is the managing director responsible for the KKR partnership.

Green Jobs Available and Can a Fast-Food Restaurant be Green?

Green Jobs Available presents the following thoughts on whether or not seeking employment in the fast food industry as green collar opportunities.  Remember, change occurs from within, you can seek employment in the fast food industry and realize that there will be enormous opportunities ahead as this industry looks to how they source their food, where they source their food, how they create green buildings, how they create greener utility resources, and more!

Well, I suppose that depends. If we’re talking about the actual building, then yes, apparently it can, as announced recently by California-based Carl’s Jr. The company behind the ubiquitous burger chain, CKE Restaurants, Inc. opened its first eco-friendly Carl’s Jr. just a few miles from its Carpinteria headquarters.

What makes it green? Energy saving features include Energy Star-rated equipment, an energy management system, a reflective roof, and LED lights in the parking lot. Plus, rainwater reuse and smart irrigation systems will reduce its water consumption.

Green Jobs Available: Saudi Oil Minister Warns Against Hasty Transition to Renewable Energy

Green Jobs Available presents the following interesting article about how some of the the oil producing countries are reacting to our push for renewable energy sources.  Become part of this change by finding a job or a new career in green collar jobs and green industries!

According to Saudi Arabia’s Oil Minister Ali Naimi, renewable energy sources are not fully equipped to meet the world’s energy demands and that governments should avoid making huge investments in developing clean energy systems.

At a conference in Huston, Mr. Naimi argued that recent injection of billions of dollars by governments to develop renewable energy systems could lead to the collapse of the oil industry. He said that such steps would drive away investors which would hurt the oil producing nations as demand and prices of oil products has been falling sharply. His remarks were clearly aimed at the Obama administration which is reversing President Bush’s policies by openly encouraging massive investments in the renewable energy sector.

United States has been a ‘close friend’ and seeing President Obama acting on his promise of energy independence seemed to have alarmed the Saudis. Bills approving of oil exploration along the US coasts, massive subsidies for renewable energy projects and Obama administration’s intent to reduce carbon emissions means a medium to long-term decline in oil imports and which have left the Saudis (and OPEC) concerned.

Green Jobs Available and Green Jobs Reality and Rhetoric

Courtesy of Bright Green Talent

Green Jobs Available presents the following thoughts of how much of a reality green jobs are, and how much, well, "hype" surrounds the green jobs movement.

Citing history as an example, Nick Ellis, managing partner of Bright Green Talent, notes that the world has given names to major forces of change even before they were fully understood or fully realized. Should the green jobs evolution, or revolution, be any different?

Green Jobs Available and How to Land a Green Job

Green Jobs Available offers the following advice and input regarding how to land a job in the green collar industry.  There will be a growing number of green collar jobs, and it is an exciting time to be searching for a job in the green industry.  As our economy climbs out of this recession, and our current administration focuses on job growth coupled with developing alternative energy sources, there will be fantastic opportunities for those who wish to be a part of this new wave of professional and economic opportunities!

As the founder of a green jobs website and a member of the green collar industry, I wanted to share some tips and suggestions on how to obtain a green job. We all know that the green jobs industry is growing but many people do not know what to do to land a job. Here are some tips below, keep in mind these are just a few suggestions, and this is what worked for me.

I spent the first few weeks doing an extensive amount of research. It is important to find out what the top companies are and who the key players are.

After the initial research, I started to attend events. You will be surprised at how many green themed events and clubs are in your area. When you attend these events it is important be make yourself as visible as possible. This is the prime setting to network and make introductions. Try to collect as many business cards as possible.

Another important strategy is to have your resume updated and ready to go. I had my resume professionally done and tweaked specifically for a green job. If you have the money to invest in a resume writer, I would recommend it.

My most important step, and what ultimately worked for me, is to follow up with the new contacts you have made. Be proactive and aggressive. Let them know you are serious about your desires and make sure to attach your resume to your emails. An email I sent to engineer I met at a green function was forwarded to the director of human resources and I was hired as a green sales representative two weeks later.
