This internship will support Grand Canyon National Park’s Wildlife Program in a study of Mexican spotted owl juvenile dispersal. The intern will live and work in the South Rim Developed Area, but extensive field work and a river trip will be required. The intern will initially assist in capturing juvenile Mexican spotted owls in the inner canyon. The owls will be trapped during early evening and/or morning hours when capture temperatures are mild. Owls will be trapped using Bal Chatry, noose pole, and hand capture methods. Once an owl is trapped, it will be gently restrained in hand, hooded, and readied for tail-mounted radio attachment. Blood will be drawn from the brachial vein following previously established methods.

Beginning late August until juvenile owls leave their natal canyon, the intern will assist in locating owls once per week by triangulating the radio signal from three or more rim-based tracking stations. When ground-based methods are no longer successful, the team will track dispersal movements using fixed-wing aircraft with wing-mounted tracking systems. Juveniles will be tracked at least two days per week. Whenever possible, the intern will assist the team by relocating the owl visually to refine locations estimated from air surveys. This design will provide information on dispersal pathways, movement habitat, settling distances, and estimates of recruitment rate.

Knowledge and Skills Required
• Skilled in use of GPS units, digital cameras, Microsoft Excel, and data collection.
• Ability to read a topographic map and use a compass; skilled in canyon hiking and orienteering.
• Ability to work independently with little or no supervision and as part of a team for extended periods of time.
• Basic knowledge of raptor ecology.
• Knowledge of radio-tracking methodology.
• Background in biological sciences with avifauna identification skills.
• Specific knowledge of plants and terrain in Grand Canyon National Park is highly valued but not required.

Additional Details
• The internship duration would be approximately June 8 through September 10, 2010.
• The intern would be based on the South Rim and shared housing will be provided.
• The intern must have a valid driver’s license and personal vehicle. A government vehicle will be available for work related tasks.
• There will be a large amount of field work associated with this project – the intern should have extensive field experience in variable conditions, extensive camping / backcountry experience, and possess a willingness to work long hours.
• The intern will be compensated $500 per week during the term of their internship.
